Ms Yang

Tai chi measured in a bid to combat heart disease

RESEARCHERS from Beijing and Sydney are conducting a clinical trial in Eastwood on how tai chi can improve the lives of people with heart disease.

Researchers from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine are working with counterparts from Western Sydney University to measure the progress of 40 Sydneysiders as they practise the ancient meditative Chinese exercise for six months.

The participants are required to regularly attend the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation temple at Eastwood.

Western Sydney University PhD candidate Emily Yang, from Beijing, guides participants in tai chi and monitors their progress through blood tests, heart rate and interviews.

The participants are encouraged to practise tai chi regularly.

All of them are more than 40 years old, and have been diagnosed with coronary heart disease or hypertension.

Ms Yang said: “We’re looking at how tai chi can help them with stress, anxiety, depression and lowering high blood pressure”.

Staff from Western Sydney University’s National Institute of Complementary Medicine are also guiding the study.

The trial started at the Beijing university, where 80 participants completed it.

The results have been encouraging.

Ms Yang said: “They may tell us their digestive qualities have improved, they have a better mind, and their sleep quality has improved.

“Some say tai chi has become part of their lives.

“After people have retired, there are not so many social activities for them, so they are glad to talk to others and feel happy to come here.

“They feel more energetic during the day.”

Eight Sydney participants have completed the trial, while others are continuing.

Ms Yang expects the trial to be completed by the end of the year.

The results will be published in medical journals.

The trial is a result of a partnership between Western Sydney University and the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese internal martial art system, which combines profound principles, theories and martial art techniques. The slow, soft and continuously flowing movements appear mysterious on the surface. However, it is the cultivation of ones internal energy, mind and the physical body that make it so unique and challenging. To generate relaxation, Tai Chi practice requires a deep level of concentration and a focused mind, thus allowing the mind to lead and guide the bodys energy.
Tai Chi is not only a martial art, but has also been widely acknowledged as being an effective health exercise. Whether Tai Chi is practiced for health, as athletic sport or martial art it takes time, patience and qualitative practice to develop Tai Chis internal properties. To achieve a high standard in Tai Chi training is a highly complex process.
